Rock’n Readers Continue Streak & Penny Greene Award Established

The St. Peter School “Rock’n Readers” have taken the top honors at the last six Appalachia Intermediate Unit 08 Elementary Reading Competitions!  Competing against dozens of other public and private schools, the team reads 40 + titles for each of the fall and spring competitions and then competes to answer questions about their knowledge and recall of the books.  Teams are awarded ribbons if they place in certain point ranges and then a trophy is presented to the school with the highest points over three rounds of competition.  The reading competition teams are comprised of students in 4th, 5th and 6th grade.  We have entered two teams in most of the past six competitions.  Students begin reading titles for the fall competition during the summer and then must read the other 40 books between November and May.  Recently, Addy Gontis, a sixth grade graduate this past spring, was awarded the first “Penny Greene Reading Award” for reading all 40 books for all six competitions.  The award was named for St. Peter School’s former librarian, Mrs. Penny Greene whose passion and love for reading and literature had a profound effect on the school during her service.  The team is currently coached by our current librarian, Mrs. Lindsey Swearman and former teacher, Mrs. Cindy Miller.  We are excited for this year’s competitions and defending our trophy title!
