On October 29, 2018, St. Peter School lost their beloved friend and pastor, Fr. Daniel O’Neill, when he passed away after a long battle with cancer. Fr. O’Neill had been the pastor of St. Peter’s since 2007 and was deeply devoted to the school students and their families. Father especially enjoyed the children’s weekly Mass where he would find special ways to help them learn and live the gospel messages of friendship, forgiveness and the importance of faith. Even through his illness the past five years, Fr. O’Neill never missed an opportunity to interact with students even if it was just a wave and a smile from the Rectory or wearing a mask to visit in the school. On All Saints Day, the students and faculty of St. Peter’s gathered for their first school Mass after Father’s passing. The Mass was led by Fr. Clem Gardner who had volunteered to help cover the parish over the holy day. When Fr. Gardner asked students during the homily how Father O’Neill “let the light of God shine through” to all of them, one student stood and responded, “He taught us to never give up.” These words could not be more true about Father O’Neill and the lessons of staying strong and never giving up on each other or our faith. God bless you, Father O’Neill, we miss you and feel blessed to have known you. You are forever in our hearts and prayers.
